Mild to moderate heat wave may continue in parts of country

The ongoing mild to moderate heat wave is likely to continue in different parts of the country, said a met office weather forecast for the next twenty-four hours begin from 9am this morning.

"A Mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and the districts of Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram and Netrokona and it may continue", said the bulletin.

Weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country.

Day temperature may rise slightly and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country. Trough of westerly low lies over West Bengal and adjoining area. Seasonal low lies over South Bay.

Country's maximum temperature on Monday was recorded by 39.2 degree celsius at Chuadanga while the lowest temperature today was recorded by 16.5 degree celsius at Tetulia.

The sun sets at 6.19 pm today and rises at 5.41 am tomorrow in the capital.

Two truck helpers killed in Jashore road accident

Two truck helpers were killed in a road accident on Jashore-Khulna highway in Basundia-Baniargati area under Sadar upazila of the district today.

The deceased were identified as truck helpers Shihab Hasan Khan, 20, son of Alamgir Hasan Khan, resident of Culkathi village in Sadar upazila of Bagerhat district and Afzal Hossain Gazi, 23, son of Akbar Ali Gazi ,resident of Laxmidari village of Satkhira Sadar upazila.

The accident occurred in the area when a Khulna-bound sand-laden truck hit from behind another maize-laden truck around 3.30am, leaving a truck helper died on the spot and another was injured, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station Md. Tajul Islam said.

The injured truck helper was taken to Jashore 250-bed General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the OC said.

The bodies were sent to Jashore General Hospital morgue for post-mortem.

A case was filed in this connection.

BNP can only trust foreigners: Qamrul

Awami League presidium member Advocate Qamrul Islam, MP, said BNP's trusted persons are only foreigners as they do not have confidence in the country's people.

"BNP become isolated from people and thus, they cannot rely on people's vote. Therefore, foreigners are becoming trusted persons of the party," said Qamrul Islam.

He was addressing an Iftar distribution programme among the low income people on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at capital's Kamrangirchar area, organised by Kamrangichar Thana Awami League.

Qamrul said, "BNP is running digital propaganda against the government and spreading falsehood to tarnish government's image. They are holding Iftar parties at five star hotels. On the other hand, the government is trying to stand by the people".

Regarding caretaker government, he said, "No matter how much BNP dreams of a caretaker government, it is not possible as it is a dead issue which will never return to Bangladesh".

Urging the BNP to take preparation for the elections, he said, the next national elections will be held according to the constitution.

Qamrul urged BNP men not to conspire or threaten to wage movements saying, "AL leaders and activists are ready to face any movement and befitting replies will be given against all the conspiracies."

Awami League Organizing Secretary SM Kamal Hossain, AL Dhaka South City Vice-President Nurul Amin Ruhul, MP, and General Secretary Humayun Kabir, among others, also spoke.

Woman gets life term jail for killing husband in Lakshmipur

A court here today sentenced a woman to life-term imprisonment for killing her husband in Sadar Upazila in 2011.

District and Sessions Judge Md Rahibul Islam handed down the verdict to Dilu Begum, 28, hailed from Kalidaser Bag village in Sadar Upazila.

According to the prosecution convict Dilu Begum strangled her husband Ali Mohon to death at their house over family feud at the night on March 30 in 2011. Following the murder, victim's mother filed a case with Lakshmipur Sadar Model Thana accusing Dilu Begum. Police pressed the charge sheet on September 19 in the year.

Testifying witnesses and evidences the court gave the order in absence of Dilu Begum who remains absconding.

The court also fined Dilu Begum Tk 10000. If she is failed to pay the amount she will have to serve one year more in jail, said Public Prosecutor Md Jasim Uddin.

President-elect Md Sahbuddin to take oath on April 24

President-elect Md Sahbuddin is scheduled to take oath as the country's 22nd President at 11am on April 24.

Cabinet Secretary Mahbub Hossain today apprised Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Choudhury of the date and time of the swearing ceremony.

The cabinet secretary met the Speaker at her JS office today to apprise her of the matter, said a press release.

JS Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Choudhury will administer the oath.

Road crash kills two in Rangpur

The driver of a battery-operated van-cart and its one passenger were killed and a woman was injured in a road accident today at Jamtala point on Rangpur-Dhaka highway in Pirganj upazila here.

"The accident occurred when a passenger bus and the van-cart collided head-on there injuring three persons on board the van-cart at noon," Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Rangpur Highway Circle Zahidur Rahman Chowdhury told BSS.

Being informed, police from Barodorga Highway police station in Pirganj upazila rushed to the spot, rescued the injured persons and sent them to Pirganj Upazila Health Complex.

The on-duty-doctor at the health complex declared two of the injured persons dead and the injured woman Rezina is undergoing treatment there.

The deceased were identified as van-cart driver Md. Mokhlesur Rahman, 50, of village Mohodipur and its passenger Md. Rezaul Islam, 16, of village Kishorgari in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur district.

"We have seized the passenger bus from the spot although its driver and helper managed to escape from the scene soon after the accident," Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Barodorga highway police station Md. Solaiman Ali said.

"A case has been lodged with Pirganj police station in this connection," the OC added.

Bangladesh Navy hands over 60 barrack houses for homeless people in Hatia

Bangladesh Navy formally handed over 60 barrack houses for homeless and underprivileged people in Hatia, Noakhali district under the Ashrayan-2 project today.

The Navy built these barrack houses under the direct direction of Prime Minister and under the Prime Minister's Office and under the overall supervision of Armed Forces Division, said an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release here.

The newly built barracks have a total of 300 units. Each of which can hold a family. Each barrack has a separate kitchen and bathroom.

Hatia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Kaiser Khasru received the necessary documents of the barracks from the Bangladesh Navy. Navy representative Lt Commander M Touhidul Islam and local dignitaries were present at the programme.

Bangladesh Navy has so far built and handed over total 4,157 barrack houses under the Ashrayan-2 project in Bagerhat, Bhola, Pirojpur, Barguna, Barisal, Jhalakathi, Chattogram, Noakhali and Cox's Bazar districts. A total of 32,145 homeless families were accommodated in these houses.

Apart from these, work is going on to construct barrack houses in Lalmohan upazila in Bhola and Sandwip upazila in Chattogram. Once finished, these houses will ensure housing for 1,200 families.

4 Jamaat men remanded in anti-terrorism act case

A Dhaka court today placed four leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami on two-day remand each in a case lodged under the Anti-Terrorism Act with capital's Vatara Police Station.

The four remanded accused are- Abul Bashar, Mohammad Eusuf, Anwarul Haque and Shibbir Ahmed.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury passed the order as police produced the four before the court and pleaded to place them on five-day remand. The court, however, allowed bail to Jamaat activists Md Sirajul Islam and Mahbub Ali in the case.

Police arrested the accused from capital's Vatara area on April 7 and filed the case under Anti-Terrorism Act.

UNDP launches digital library app

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bangladesh today released a mobile application called 'UNDPBD e-library' to enable instant access to all digital resources in one place - on any handheld device.

Currently, it has almost 200 e-books, a UNDP press release said.

UNDP Bangladesh Resident Representative Stefan Liller said: "There is hardly an aspect of our lives that has not been transformed by digital technology. In Bangladesh, we are using technology not only to deliver many of our programs but also to make us accessible to our partners and the communities in which we work. This e-library is one such initiative that offers a wide array of resources for everyone, including students, teachers, and researchers".

Currently, the UNDPBD e-library app can be downloaded from Google play, and soon it will be available on the apple store. Users need to sign up once to use the digital library.

Seminar on ‘Role of Zakat in Poverty Alleviation’ held

A day-long divisional level seminar titled 'Role of Zakat in Poverty Alleviation' was held at the conference room of the Divisional Commissioner in the city today.

The Rangpur Divisional Office of Islamic Foundation under the auspices of the Ministry of Religious Affairs organised the event with Director General of Islamic Foundation (Additional Secretary) Dr. Mohd Bashirul Alam in the chair.

Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md. Habibur Rahman as the chief guest addressed the seminar moderated by Deputy Director of Islamic Foundation at its Rangpur Divisional Office Md. Mosaddekul Alam.

Integrated efforts for women’s political empowerment stressed

Integrated efforts of all the relevant government and non-government organizations with media, particularly print, electronic and social, can be the crucial means for political empowerment of women.

Political empowerment of women is the precondition to getting the womenfolk ahead through freeing them from all sorts of disparity, violence and repression.

Media personalities, development activists and grassroots women leaders came up with the observations while addressing an orientation meeting titled "Media Engagement in Political Empowerment of Women '' at Hotel Warisan in Rajshahi city today.

On behalf of Aparajita: Political Empowerment of Women project, Helvetas- Swiss Intercooperation Bangladesh organized the meeting supported by the Khan Foundation and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

Project Director Proshanta Tripura, Project Coordinator Morshed Alam, District Project Coordinator Saiful Islam, Advocacy and Networking Coordinator Shaheena Laizu and Field Coordinator Mariam Khanom addressed the meeting as resource persons disseminating their expertise on the issue.

With Aparajita Faima Khatun in the chair, the meeting was addressed, among others, by President of Rajshahi Press Club Saidur Rahman and women leaders Piary Begum, Rahima bEGUM and Moina Begum.

The meeting was told that the government under the prudent and farsighted leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly for the political empowerment of women for the overall development of the country.

Taking the issue of women's importance to the nation-building process into special consideration, the government has adopted diversified programmes so that the womenfolk can contribute to taking the nation forward spontaneously.

Already, the government has attained success in this field as women's participation in the local government institutions has been ensured and they have been working for the welfare of the womenfolk significantly.

Listing various initiatives adopted by the present government, journalist Saidur Rahman said a special allowance has been arranged for UP level women to make them self-reliant. In many fields, women were given priority.

He, however, opined there are more ways to go for women empowerment, side by side, ensuring gender balance in every sector.

Terming the present government as women-friendly, he said the government has attached top priority for women development.

He put emphasis on both men-women's equal participation, for achieving the SDGs by 2030 coupled with building a developed and prosperous Bangladesh by 2041.

Journalist Rahman called for a concerted effort of all the government and non-government sectors for freeing women from all sorts of violence and repression.

Utmost emphasis should be given on sustainable development of the womenfolk, he added.
