No scope of appointing lawyers for defending fugitives Tarique, Zubaida: AG

Attorney General AM Amin Uddin today said there is no scope of appointing lawyers here to defend fugitives Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman in a graft case.

"There are many verdicts of the Supreme Court in this regard. Appellate Division has always been strict on this matter," he said while talking to newsmen at his office.

The chief state counsel said there is no precedent of defending oneself without appearing before the court in country's judicial history.

"Two brothers (Sikder Group managing director Ron Haque Sikder and his brother Dipu Haque Sikder) had pleaded for bail from abroad during Corona pandemic time. High Court did not even hear their plea, instead fined them for filing the petition. So Tarique and Zubaida have no scope of defending themselves from abroad," the attorney general added.

Judge Md Asaduzzaman of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court on April 9 has set April 13 to pass its order whether BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman will get any lawyers to defend them in absentia in the graft case.

Each of them was given Taka 6,250. Of the beneficiaries, 100 were from Rajshahi city areas, while 162 others from nine upazilas of the district.

Commissioner of Rajshahi division GSM Zafarullah attended the distribution ceremony as the chief guest, while DC Shamim Ahmed was in the chair.

Deputy Secretary to the Ministry of Religious Affairs Shakhawat Hossain, Additional DC Kallyan Chowdhury, IF Director Dr Abdus Salam, Divisional Director Rezzaqul Haider and Assistant Director Muzahidul Islam also spoke on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, GSM Zafarullah attributed that zakat can help reduce income disparity with economic growth as a poverty reduction tool.

Zakat is also considered one of the unique instruments for poverty alleviation as wealth is transferred from well-off people to worse-off people. Zakat can be administered by both government and volunteer organisations.

He also mentioned that adjustment between income tax and zakat can ensure greater collection. Tax rebates for zakat payers should be there to increase the volume of collection.

Zakat can reduce pressure on the government's spending on social safety net and foreign borrowing, the IF Director Jalal Ahmed observes, suggesting advocacy support of the nation's economists to this effect.

Anti-liberation force is main barrier to constitutional government: lawmakers

Both treasury and opposition lawmakers today said the anti-liberation force is the main barrier to the constitutional form of government.

"The anti-liberation force under the umbrella of BNP is the main obstacle to the constitutional form of government", they said.

The lawmakers were participating in the discussion on a motion brought under section 147 of the rules of procedure of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) marking its golden jubilee at the Sangsad Bhaban here.

Deputy Leader of the House Matia Chowdhury said the emergence of the parliament and the existence of the nation are closely related as Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made a huge sacrifice for development of the nation.

Praising the current development of the country, the deputy leader said Bangabandhu had liberated the country and his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working to fulfill the dream of Bangabandhu.

"Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had introduced parliamentary form of government for the welfare of the people while the anti-liberation force is working to destabilize the country through neglecting constitutional consistency", said Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan.

The present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina established accountability in the Jatiya Sangsad, said Chief Whip Nur-E Alam Chowdhury.

He said, "The members of parliament are now the chairmen of the parliamentary standing committees instead of the concerned ministers and question-answer session is also relevant with the parliamentary procedure."

Opposition leader of the Jatiya Sangsad Begum Raushan Ershad termed the Jatiya Sangsad as the centre of all the expectations and ambitions of the people.

She said as the whole activities of the government are being mobilized in the Jatiya Sangsad, that's why political unity is crucial for well functioning of the legislative house.

Treasury bench lawmaker Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed, Jatiya Party deputy leader GM Kader, among others, also participated in the discussion.

Later, the discussion under the proposal was moved to the house and then it was unanimously adopted after being okayed by the lawmakers with Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
