21 RMP people get honour for good performance

A total of 21 officers and members of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) were given honours as recognition for good performance in Rajshahi metropolis.

They were accorded the honor in a monthly crime review meeting held at RMP Headquarters conference hall here Wednesday afternoon with Commissioner Anisur Rahman in the chair.

In the review meeting, various issues related to law and order situation, smooth traffic management during the holy month of Ramadan and the upcoming Eid festival, expediting the community and bit policing activities, carrying out of arrest warrant and progress of the important cases were discussed elaborately.

Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Anisur Rahman urged his subordinate colleagues to discharge their respective duties with utmost sincerity and honesty to attain trust and confidence of the peace loving public in general.

He also asked all the police stations, detective branch, traffic division and city special branch to put in their integrated efforts for combating crimes and ensuring improved traffic management.

Commissioner Rahman, however, said that today's honour will encourage and inspire other RMP members to do better performance.

Additional Commissioners Faruque Hossain, Bijoy Basak and Samsun Naher and Deputy Commissioner Saifuddin Shaheen also addressed the meeting.

Modern agriculture can improve people’s living standard: Razzaque

Agriculture Minister and Awami League (AL) Presidium Member Dr Md Abdur Razzaque today said the living standards of the people will improve if the agriculture of the country becomes modern.

"People's quality of life will improve only if agriculture is modern. Therefore, the current government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working to make agriculture modern and profitable," he said.

The minister said these while visiting vermicompost, sunflower field, malta, pineapple, cashew-nut and coffee plantation in Sapchari and Dichanpara of Naniarchar upazila of Rangamati district this morning.

The government is implementing integrated programmes to increase agricultural production, processing and exports, he said, adding that as a result of various initiatives, agriculture is becoming mechanized, processing of agricultural products exports are being increased.

Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs Minister Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing, Dipankar Talukdar, MP, Basanti Chakma, MP, Agriculture Secretary Wahida Akhtar, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) Executive Chairman Dr Shaikh Mohammad Bokhtiar, Director General of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Badal Chandra Biswas, Deputy Commissioner of Rangamati Mizanur Rahman and Superintendent of Police Mir Abu Towhid were also present, among others, on the occasion.

Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs Minister Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing said that the development of CHT is progressing under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

"If this development trend continues, the hilly regions will not be a burden for the country; rather those will become the most resourceful areas for the country," he added.

Later, in the afternoon, agriculture minister Razzaque attended a discussion on the issues of increasing production and development of agriculture in Chittagong Hill Tracts at Shah Bahumukhi High School in Rangamati district town.

Speaking on the occasion, he said election is the only way to come to the power.

"Awami League never came to power without elections. The next election will be on time. And it will be held in a free, fair and peaceful manner," he added.

About BNP, the AL leader said BNP always comes to power through illegal means.

BNP will never be allowed to come to power through back doors without participating in the elections, he said.

On the same day at noon, the minister inaugurated the Digital Display Board for Agricultural Meteorology and Agricultural Meteorological Radio at the Regional Office of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Rangamati town.

It has been installed as part of the Digital Display Boards in all districts and headquarters of the country and installation of Agro Meteorological Radios in 12 agricultural regions under the Agro-Meteorological Information Systems Development Project.

Bangladesh condemns Israeli attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque

Bangladesh has strongly condemns the violence unleashed against innocent worshippers and civilians at the Holy Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem by occupied Israeli forces during prayers on Wednesday early morning.

"Bangladesh expresses deep concerns over the violations of basic civil norms, international human rights laws and international accords by the Israeli forces," a foreign ministry's press release said here today.

It said Bangladesh believes that the freedom of religion must be held as a fundamental human right and the right of practicing religious rituals, particularly in the holy month of Ramadan must be ensured.

Bangladesh also urges the international community to take sustained measures to end such repeated violence in the occupied territories against international norms.

Bangladesh reiterates its support for inalienable rights of the people of Palestine for a sovereign and independent homeland and reaffirms its position in favor of establishing an independent state of Palestine on the basis of two-state solution, said the release.

Country witnessing tremendous dev at all levels: Speaker

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, MP, said the country is now witnessing tremendous development at all levels under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

"Currently, the country is witnessing incredible progress at all levels," the Speaker said while virtually joining a view-exchange-meeting of Rangpur Divisional unit leaders and workers of the Bangladesh Awami Olama League as part of the preparatory meeting for its First Triennial Conference-2023.

Dr Chaudhury said the incumbent government is also providing various grants, including construction of mosques and madrasas across the country for Muslims and scholars.

Wishing success of the triennial conference, she assured the Ulema League of providing all-out cooperation.

First campaign of Bangabandhu Innovation Grant-2023 held at DU

The first activation campaign of the Bangabandhu Innovation Grant-2023 was held at the Institute of Modern Language Auditorium on Dhaka University campus today.

The Innovation Design and Entrepreneurship Academy (iDEA) Project of Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) under the ICT Division in association with DU Entrepreneurship Development Club (DUEDC) organised the campaign with iDEA Project Director and Joint Secretary Md Altaf Hossain in the chair, said a press release.

Associate Professor of DU Marketing Department Dr Rafiuddin Ahmed was present at the function while Senior Consultant of iDEA project and BIG 2023 Chief Coordinator Siddhartho Goshwami gave a presentation on BIG 2023.

Speaking on the occasion, Altaf Hossain highlighted different activities of the iDEA project, saying that the project is playing a significant role in Bangladesh's journey towards being a smart Bangladesh by 2041.

Noting that the iDEA has been conducting campaigns across the country to assist the entrepreneurs, he said Apart from providing grants, iDEA project provides support through mentoring, training, networking and more.

In his speech, Dr Rafiuddin Ahmed encouraged youth entrepreneurs to come up with innovative initiatives and said startups fail due to the lack of efficient management.

He also said that Bangladesh has seen an incredible rise in the number of entrepreneurs recently, which was not seen in the previous 50 years.

iDEA Project Communications Consultant and Associate Coordinator of BIG 2023 Sohag Chandra Das, Consultant and BIG 2023 Technology Associate Coordinator Abul Kalam Ahsanul Azad and Consultant of IT Help and Support Md Mominul Islam were present were present at the event, among others.

With the theme 'Dare to Stand BIG', the biggest initiative "BIG" is being organised for the country's entrepreneurs since 2019 by the Innovation Design and Entrepreneurship Academy (iDEA) Project of Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) under the ICT Division.

The aspirant entrepreneurs can apply online (www.big.gov.bd) for their ICT based initiatives by April 22, 2023.

A 3-day bootcamp will be organized with the selected top startups. The top 51 startups of "BIG 2023" will be selected from the most promising startups of the bootcamp while a selection panel consisting of experienced judges will select the best startup and it will be awarded a grant of Taka 1 core.

The rest of the 50 startups will receive a grant of Taka 10 lakh each. Besides, there are different opportunities for startups in BIG 2023 including investment, special certificates of appreciation, and mentoring.

Youth gets life imprisonment for raping schoolgirl

A court here today convicted and sentenced one Md Rifat, 21, to life imprisonment and fined him Taka one lakh for abducting and subsequently raping a schoolgirl in 2019.

Judge Begum Mafroja Pervin of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 pronounced the judgement in presence of the convict and later sent him to prison with conviction warrant.

According to the case documents, convict Rifat used to disturb the sixth-grader to and from her school for long. Victim's family repeatedly warned the crook for his act. On October 5, 2019, Rifat and his associates abducted the girl and kept her confined to their den, where she was repeatedly raped.

Police on October 7, 2019, managed to arrest Rifat and rescued the girl. The victim's father filed the case the next day against Rifat and 2/3 accomplices.

Bangladesh, India complementing each other’s development: envoy

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Prany Kumar Verma today said the current bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India has been complementing each other's nation development while New Delhi counts Dhaka first in its neighbourhood operation policy.

"Our Bilateral relationship today is truly multifaceted and complementing each other's nation development," he said.

The Indian envoy was speaking at the unveiling Ceremony of Bharat Bichitra Special Edition on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee publication at Indian High Commission here.

Verma said India and Bangladesh have been enjoying such an excellent relationship that finds "few parallels across the world".

"India caters top most priority to the relations with Bangladesh ... for us, as we often say, it is neighborhood first, but it is the neighborhood two ... it is Bangladesh first," he said.

The high commissioner noted that when India became president of G-20, New Delhi invited Bangladesh as a special guest country to join deliberations of that important multinational platform.

"We believe that the success of Bangladesh in contributing to global development, to address some of the global challenges, overcome the adversities and achieve progress ... those stories to be heard at the global platforms and from these important lessons can be drawn by others," he said.

He said New Delhi not only honored a very important friend of India but also is celebrating partnership and friendship by inviting Bangladesh as its special guest country at the G-20.

Since 1971, he said both Bangladesh and India together have become fast growing economies of the world today.

"Our advancing progress and our rising ambitions for a better future are creating new opportunities and new momentum for our cooperation," he said.

He said there is a great degree of commitment from the leaders of our two countries who take the Bangladesh-India ties to newer heights.

"The Special edition of 'Bharat Bichitra', that also marked 50th year of this flagship publication of the High Commission of India," the envoy said.

In these 50 years, he said, 'Bharat Bichitra' has captured all the major moments and milestones of India Bangladesh relationship and it has also been a reservoir of all sentiments and mutual empathy.

He said that 'Bharat Bichitra' has been a valuable platform to promote the cultural exchange with Bangladesh and to enhance the standing of India among the people of Bangladesh.

First issue of the magazine was published in April 1973, since then, its publication has gone on uninterruptedly even during the Covid-19 pandemic, he added.

The special edition, which was unveiled today, features articles, interviews, translations that reflect the diversity and richness of Indian culture and also chronicles development and contribution of Bangladesh to the region and the world.

Asaduzzaman Noor, MP, Bangla Academy president writer Selina Hossain and director general poet Mohammad Nurul Huda also spoke among others while a number of eminent poets recited poems marking the occasion.

Jubo League distributes Eid gifts in Rangpur

The district unit of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League today distributed sarees, lungis and cash as Eid gifts among 500 popor, distressed and needy people of the city.

The Eid gifts were distributed in a function arranged in front of the mural of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangbandhu Sqaure on the DC Mour area in the city.

Rangpur District Jubo League former Joint Convener Laxmin Chandra Das presided over the function.

Bangladesh Awami Jubo League Central Committee Joint General Secretary Biswas Matiur Rahman and its Organizing Secretary Mohammad Sohail Parvez with local Jubo League leaders distributed the Eid gifts as honorable guests.

Rangpur City Jubo League President Sirajum Monir Bashar, former members of District Jubo League Diesel Ahmed, Naushad Ahmed Raju, Zahedul Islam Babu and other leaders were present.

Online sale of advance train tickets for Eid begins tomorrow

The sale of all advance train tickets ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr will begin online tomorrow.

Passengers will be able to purchase the tickets for 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 April on 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 April respectively, said a press release of the Ministry of Railways.

On the other hand, the return tickets of 25-30 April will be sold from 15 to 20 April.

For a hassle-free service for the passengers in the holy month of Ramadan, cent percent railway tickets will be available online.

The railway tickets can be bought through "Rail Sheba" mobile app alongside SMS through verification of the National Identity Card, passport and birth certificate.

On the occasion of the Eid-ul Fitr, the operation of cross-border train 'Mitali Express' will remain suspended from 18 to 27 April while 'Maitri Express' from 20 to 27 April.

However, the cross-border 'Bandhan Express' will run as usual.

Starting from 17th April to the day before Eid, the Dhaka-bound Ekota, Panchagarh, Nilsagor, Kurigram, Lalmoni and Rangpur Express trains won't have a break at Dhaka Airport Station, the release added.

Two fugitive convicts held from city’s Ashulia, Khilkhet

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two fugitive convicts, who have been sentenced to life term, in separate cases from Ashulia and Khilkhet of the capital early today and on Wednesday afternoon.

Md Selim, 45, who was sentenced to life in an arms case and has been absconding for 22 years, was detained from Ashulia followed by a secret operation conducted by RAB around 4:45am this morning.

The arrested Selim is the son of Abdul Khalek of Satashi village under Durgapur Thana of Netrakona district.

According to the RAB, an arms case was filed against him in 2001 and a special tribunal case was filed on 2002 against the arrested at Tahirpur police station of Sunamganj district.

In 2015, the court sentenced Selim to life imprisonment in the arms case.

Besides, a team of RAB-3 arrested Md Yusuf Ali, 28, who was sentenced to life in a murder case in Sonaimuri area of Noakhali by conducting a raid in Khilkhet police station area of the capital around 4pm on Wednesday.

The arrested Yusuf Ali is the son of Rafiq Ullah of Barahinagar village under Sonaimuri Thana of Noakhali district.

Yusuf Ali was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019, in a murder case filed against him with Sonaimuri Thana on 2009, RAB sources said.

RAB-3 sources confirmed the matter saying that the convicts will be handed over to the concerned authorities after necessary legal actions are taken against them.
