Dhaka: The mass uprising of July-August 2024 led to the downfall of the Awami League government and significantly transformed the collective psyche of Bangladesh’s people. This powerful movement revived the mental strength of citizens, which had been stifled under Sheikh Hasina’s 16-year rule.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5, calls for reform grew louder. BNP’s acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, has been a pivotal figure in the country’s push for reform. His vision for reducing the quota in government jobs from 55 percent to 5 percent, first articulated in 2014, laid the groundwork for subsequent demands for change. Although reform discussions intensified post-Hasina, the groundwork was initially laid by Tarique Rahman and the BNP.
For over a decade, the BNP has championed structural reforms. Despite facing numerous challenges, including cases, attacks, and enforced disappearances, BNP leaders consistently presented reform proposals. In alignment with the core ideals of the Liberation War, the party announced ‘Vision 2030’ in 2017, followed by a 27-point agenda in 2022 and a 31-point agenda in 2023. These documents have significantly influenced the current reform discourse.
Tarique Rahman’s vision for a reformed Bangladesh includes strong democratic institutions, economic justice, environmental sustainability, judicial independence, and public welfare policies. His commitments focus on reinstating the caretaker government system, balancing power between the Prime Minister and the President, and introducing a bicameral legislature. His plans aim to prevent power concentration by limiting the terms of the Prime Minister.
The BNP’s 31-point outline proposes various commissions, such as the ‘Constitution Commission’ and ‘Judicial Commission’, and plans to amend election-related laws to establish an independent Election Commission. Additionally, the BNP proposes an upper chamber legislative assembly and balancing executive powers.
The party promises to annul laws infringing on human rights and plans to introduce universal healthcare, improve education, and support agriculture and export-oriented industries. Tarique Rahman presented an ‘Eight Development Plan’ to distinguish BNP’s agenda from previous governments.
During a series of events titled “Plan for Rebuilding the Nation”, Tarique Rahman shared his plans, focusing on critical areas like agriculture, employment, education, health, and social safety nets. His initiatives include nationwide employment programs, modern education reforms, and healthcare improvements.
Tarique Rahman’s leadership has shown goodwill towards genuine reform, promoting BNP’s agenda and expressing a strong desire to implement these reforms for peace and stability in Bangladesh. His statements emphasize politics as a means for public welfare, reflecting the legacy of his father, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. His leadership qualities have been widely praised, guiding Bangladesh towards stability and reform.
