Davos: The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi on Tuesday expressed his agency’s commitment to assist Bangladesh in resolving the ongoing Rohingya crisis. Grandi’s remarks came following his meeting with Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Grandi assured Prof Yunus of UNHCR’s readiness to collaborate with Bangladesh, particularly in organizing a major global conference on the Rohingya issue later this year. Prof Yunus emphasized the importance of international attention on the crisis, stating that the recent influx of approximately 100,000 additional refugees has exacerbated the situation in Bangladesh.
Grandi acknowledged Bangladesh’s efforts in improving living conditions for the Rohingyas by allowing them to construct shelters with materials beyond just bamboo and tarpaulins. The meeting also covered the humanitarian conditions in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, where the Arakan Army is engaged in conflict with the Myanmar military.
Prof Yunus highlighted the appointment of a high representative to oversee the Rohingya crisis, ensuring coordination among government and international agencies.
