Dhaka: A Dhaka court today imposed a travel ban on two former lawmakers and their wives over allegations of graft, bribery, and abuse of power. Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order in response to a petition filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director Abdul Mazed.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the travel ban targets former Member of Parliament (MP) from Bhola-3 constituency Nurun Nabi Chowdhury, also known as Shaown, and his wife Farzana Chowdhury. It also applies to former MP of Sunamganj-1 constituency Moazzem Hossain Ratan and his wife Mahmuda Hossain Lota.

The case documents reveal that the ACC is investigating allegations that the accused amassed significant wealth through corruption, bribery, and abuse of power, with the assets reportedly registered under their names and those of their family members. The documents suggest that preliminary evidence could support these allegations.

The ACC’s case documents also indicate that there is credible information suggesting that the accused have been attempting to flee the country. Consequently, the ACC submitted an application to the Immigration Police on January 27 to prevent the accused from leaving Bangladesh.
