Dhaka: Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed today proposed allocating Taka 2,015 crore for the Law and Justice Division for fiscal year (FY) 2025-2026, which is Taka 93 crore higher than the allocation in the revised budget in FY 2024-2025. Dr Salehuddin Ahmed presented the new budget in a televised speech.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the finance adviser, in his budget speech, also proposed Taka 47 crore for the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division for the FY 2025-26. Dr Salehuddin highlighted the formation of thirteen monitoring committees, comprising judges from the High Court Division, to oversee subordinate courts across the country. This initiative aims to improve the judicial system and has reportedly increased the rate of case disposal in subordinate courts. The Supreme Court Judicial Appointment Ordinance, 2025 has been issued to ensure a transparent, neutral, and accountable process for appointing qualified judges.

Dr Salehuddin also noted the withdrawal of a significant number of criminal cases filed between July 1 and August 5, 2024, in response to the Revolution. Additionally, efforts are being made to identify and withdraw false cases filed under the Anti Terrorism Act and the Cyber Security Act. To address crimes committed during the July Mass Uprising, the International Crimes (Tribunals) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024 has been promulgated, aligning it with the Rome Statute and relevant international laws. This ordinance facilitates the trial process of crimes against humanity committed during the uprising, adhering to international standards.

Meanwhile, the proposed budget allocates Taka 250 crore for the Supreme Court for FY 2025-2026, slightly less than the Taka 252 crore in the revised budget of the outgoing fiscal year.
