Dhaka: The High Court (HC) today scheduled March 5 for a hearing regarding a rule about compensating the family of Ayaan Ahmed, a five-year-old who died following a failed circumcision surgery at United Medical College Hospital in the capital’s Satarkul area. The hearing will also address actions against those responsible for the incident. A bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury issued the order.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Advocate ABM Shahjahan Akand Masum represented the writ filed concerning this case, while senior advocate Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal and Barrister Jarin Rahman appeared on behalf of United Hospital. Deputy Attorney General Tanim Khan represented the state, with Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir present as an intervener.

Case documents reveal that Ayaan was admitted to United Medical College Hospital by his parents for a circumcision procedure on December 31, 2023. After anesthesia was administered, Ayaan did not regain consciousness within the expected timeframe and was transferred to United Hospital in Gulshan-2, where he was placed in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Tragically, Ayaan passed away on January 7, 2024.

The victim’s family alleges that doctors at United Medical College Hospital administered general anesthesia to Ayaan without proper authorization. Advocate ABM Shahjahan Akand Masum filed the writ on January 9, 2024, prompting the High Court to order an investigation into the incident and submission of a report. The court also issued a rule questioning why an order should not be passed to award Taka five crore as compensation to Ayaan’s family.
