Davos: FIFA President Gianni Infantino today expressed his intention to visit Bangladesh within the next two months, with hopes of providing financial support to the country’s women’s football sector.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Infantino made these remarks during a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. Infantino commended Yunus’s vision of making sports carbon neutral and emphasized FIFA’s commitment to developing soccer in the South Asian region.

Infantino stated, “I want to visit Bangladesh in the next two months,” while addressing Prof Yunus and acknowledged FIFA’s interest in funding women’s football in Bangladesh. This commitment came after the Chief Adviser requested support for building necessary facilities such as dormitories and infrastructure for female footballers in Bangladesh.

Furthermore, Infantino mentioned FIFA’s plans to assist women’s football in Saudi Arabia, highlighting that the Bangladeshi diaspora in the kingdom would also benefit from this initiative. He expressed regret for not being able to visit Bangladesh during the ongoing youth festival, despite receiving an invitation.

The meeting was also attended by Lamiya Morshed, the SDG coordinator of the Bangladesh government, and Tareq Ariful Islam, the Bangladesh envoy in Geneva.
