Govt Prioritizes Affordable Jute Bags to Replace Polythene: Adviser

Dhaka: Adviser to the ministries of textiles and jute, and commerce Sheikh Bashiruddin announced today that the interim government is actively working to introduce jute bags in the market at affordable prices to phase out polythene shopping bags. He emphasized the benefits of jute bags, highlighting their reusability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness during a view-exchange meeting.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting was attended by presidents and general secretaries of various markets in Dhaka city and organized by the textiles and jute ministry. Sheikh Bashiruddin urged traders to take an active role in producing and marketing jute bags, encouraging them to become involved in the trade themselves. He sought their input on effective strategies for marketing these environmentally friendly alternatives across the country.



Textiles and jute ministry secretary Md Abdur Rouf highlighted the ministry’s proactive approach in promoting jute bags as a viable alternative to polythene. This initiative aligns with the objectives of the Compulsory Use of Jute Packaging in Products Act-2010, aiming for nationwide implementation.



The meeting also saw the presence of additional secretaries Arifur Rahman Khan, Md. Selim Khan, and Md. Abdur Rahim Khan, along with Zeenat Ara, Director General of the Jute Diversification Promotion Center, and TCB Director General Brigadier General Mohammad Faisal Azad. Representatives from the Ministries of Commerce, and Textiles and Jute, as well as market representatives from Dhaka city, were also in attendance.
