Jahangirnagar: A group of Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture (CLC) students at Jahangirnagar University (JU) today staged a day-long sit-in protest demanding an immediate solution to classroom shortages and the establishment of a permanent building by considering the academic needs.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, around 30 students gathered for the protest at approximately 11:30 am in front of the new administrative building, continuing their demonstration until 6:00 pm to emphasize their demands. Mustafizur Rahman, a third-year student, highlighted the issue stating, “Our institute has been conducting classes and exams with just two classrooms. If one batch holds classes, another cannot attend exams or lectures at a time.”
He further criticized the university administration for its lack of response to their ongoing demand to designate the abandoned Fazilatunnesa Hall as their permanent institute building. Borhan Uddin, another third-year student, expressed frustration over the unresolved issue, mentioning their repeated attempts to engage with the vice-chancellor through sit-in meetings, which have yet to yield a sustainable solution.
In response, JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Kamrul Ahsan stated, “We constituted a committee led by Pro-VC (Academic) Professor Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman to see the matter. They will visit the institute tomorrow to provide a temporary solution.” He also announced a meeting scheduled for March 20 to discuss the issue with students and faculty to find an effective and permanent resolution.
