Dhaka: Political analyst Prof Dr. Mahbub Ullah has acclaimed BNP founder and Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman as a pivotal figure in the nation-building of Bangladesh, asserting that his efforts laid a solid foundation for the country’s development.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mahbub Ullah, in an interview on the eve of Ziaur Rahman’s 44th martyrdom anniversary, emphasized that referring to Ziaur Rahman merely as a political leader would undermine his significant contributions as a statesman and nation-builder. He highlighted how Ziaur Rahman’s initiatives in agriculture, the garment industry, and foreign remittances have been crucial to Bangladesh’s economic standing.

Mahbub Ullah detailed Ziaur Rahman’s dedication to transforming Bangladesh’s agriculture, including efforts to make it self-reliant, increase production, and provide essential resources to farmers. He noted the substantial growth in the country’s food production and credited Ziaur Rahman’s vision and actions for these advancements.

In discussing Ziaur Rahman’s influence on the garment industry, Mahbub Ullah explained how he fostered international collaborations and implemented policies that significantly contributed to the sector’s growth. The development of this industry under Ziaur Rahman’s leadership has opened new employment opportunities, particularly for women, and positioned Bangladesh as a global leader in garment production.

Mahbub Ullah also acknowledged Ziaur Rahman’s role in enhancing manpower exports and strengthening foreign relations, particularly with the Middle East. He pointed out the importance of foreign remittances in sustaining Bangladesh’s economy, attributing their origins to Ziaur Rahman’s diplomatic efforts.

Reflecting on Ziaur Rahman’s contribution to the Liberation War, Mahbub Ullah recounted his declaration of independence from the Kalurghat radio station, which inspired and motivated the people of Bangladesh. Ziaur Rahman’s leadership in the war and his subsequent recognition with the gallantry award Bir Uttam were highlighted as significant aspects of his legacy.

Mahbub Ullah further discussed Ziaur Rahman’s role during the political turmoil following the 1975 coup, noting how his leadership helped stabilize the country in a time of crisis. His popularity among soldiers and his decisive actions during those days were underscored as key factors in preserving Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.
