Dhaka: A writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court (SC), seeking its direction for live broadcasting of the hearings of cases of constitutional and public importance at the apex court. The petition aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the judicial process by allowing the public to witness the proceedings of significant cases in real-time.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the petitioners include Supreme Court lawyer Saddam Hossain, Abdullah Sadik, Mizanul Haque, judge court lawyer Zayed Bin Amzad, trainee lawyers Mahmudul Hasan, Sabbir Ahmed, and four law students. The initiative underscores the petitioners’ belief in the public’s right to information and the constitutionally recognized right to fair justice.

Petitioners’ lawyer Mohammed Shishir Manir confirmed the filing to BSS, emphasizing that the right to information is legally recognized. He stated, “Hearings of important cases in different countries around the world are streamed live. As per Article 35 of the constitution, transparent and accountable justice is basic rights. That is why the writ petition was filed.”

The Supreme Court registrar general, along with the secretaries of the Information and Communication Technology Division and the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, have been named as respondents in the petition. The petitioners hope that the court will recognize the importance of live broadcasts in promoting judicial transparency and accountability.
