Dhaka: The US support for the displaced Rohingyas, who took shelters in Bangladesh, will continue. Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Apurba Jahangir announced this at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy this evening.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, US President Donald Trump, upon assuming office, suspended US support to all countries globally for 90 days. However, the assistance and resources that USAID continues to provide for the Rohingyas’ food and nutrition have been exempted from this suspension. This exemption underscores the commitment of the US to continue its humanitarian support for the Rohingyas.
Apurba Jahangir further mentioned that because of this exemption, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed his gratitude to the US president. Officials from the US Embassy in Dhaka met today with the Chief Adviser’s High Representative on Rohingya Crisis and Priority Issues, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, to convey this important message.
In a statement from the chief adviser’s press wing, Chief Adviser Prof Yunus conveyed his sincere thanks to President Trump for exempting life-saving food and nutrition support to the displaced Rohingyas sheltered in Bangladesh from the US aid freeze. The continued support is vital for addressing the ongoing needs of the Rohingya community in Bangladesh.
The announcement was further confirmed during a visit by officials from the US Embassy in Dhaka to High Representative Dr. Khalilur Rahman this afternoon. The meeting emphasized the importance of the ongoing support and the US’s commitment to humanitarian aid.
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder were also present at the press briefing, highlighting the significance of this development in the ongoing efforts to support the displaced Rohingyas.
