New York: The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on the scope, modalities, format, and organization of the high-level conference addressing the situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar. This initiative was sponsored by Malaysia and Finland.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh, Ambassador Md Salahuddin Noman Choudhury, intervened during the open debate session and proposed a vote on the resolution after Russia suggested several amendments that Bangladesh did not accept. The President of the General Assembly subsequently convened the vote, resulting in the resolution’s adoption with 141 votes in favor.
Notably, there were no votes against the resolution, though 10 countries chose to abstain. The adoption of this resolution is considered a pivotal step towards resolving the Rohingya issue, coinciding with Dhaka’s plans to organize a special summit on the Rohingya crisis in New York in September.
