Sylhet Tea Workers to Resume Work Following Salary Agreement

Sylhet: The local administration has promised to pay one week’s salary arrears and provide ration to tea workers in various gardens in Sylhet, prompting them to agree to resume work from next Friday. Sylhet Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Khoshnur Rubaiyat confirmed the arrangement.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Bangladesh Tea Board Chairman Major General Sheikh Md. Sarwar Hossain engaged in discussions with the tea garden workers to understand their demands. Following these talks, it was decided that the workers would receive one week’s salary, with Taka 10 lakh being contributed by the tea company and the remaining amount arranged by the district administrator.



Tea worker leader Sohag Chhatri expressed approval of the decision, noting that a temporary solution had been reached. He stated, “The authorities will pay the tea workers one week’s salary tomorrow, Thursday. The tea gardens will be opened from Friday. The next salary has been assured to be paid quickly by selling the leaves that will be picked. Everyone has accepted and agreed to return to work.”



Previously, tea workers from the Burjan, Charagang, and Kalagul gardens in Sylhet had blocked the Amberkhana-Airport road with a list of 11 demands, highlighting the urgency of addressing their grievances.
