Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee Member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain emphasized the pivotal role of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman as a pathfinder during the nation’s crisis, acknowledging his contributions as a freedom fighter, proclaimer of independence, and leader. Dr Mosharraf made these remarks while reflecting on Ziaur Rahman’s significant influence in Bangladesh’s history.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Mosharraf praised Shaheed Zia as a brave soldier and sector commander during the Liberation War, who subsequently emerged as a leader bringing stability to the nation. In an interview with the state-run news agency, Dr Mosharraf recounted Ziaur Rahman’s journey, describing him as a guide who reemerged during the sepoy-people’s revolution on November 7, amidst political upheavals.
Dr Mosharraf highlighted the period between August 15 and November 7, noting significant events including a military coup led by Brigadier Khaled Mosharraf on November 3, which eventually led to Ziaur Rahman’s historic address urging unity among countrymen. He was appointed Chief Martial Law Administrator, and later, the presidency was transferred to him from former Chief Justice Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem. Dr Mosharraf termed this transition as historic, marking a return to multiparty democracy under Ziaur Rahman’s leadership.
After assuming the presidency, Ziaur Rahman sought public mandate through a national referendum and subsequently won a presidential election against General MAG Osmani, the candidate nominated by the Awami League. Dr Mosharraf recalled Ziaur Rahman’s extensive programs post-presidency, including his 19-point political philosophy and efforts to empower women, restore press freedom, and promote agricultural and industrial development.
Dr Mosharraf also defended Ziaur Rahman’s concept of Bangladeshi nationalism, advocating for a geographical identity-based nationalism. He noted Ziaur Rahman’s contributions to establishing the garment industry and rural electrification, founding BAPEX, and pursuing development-oriented politics.
Following Ziaur Rahman’s assassination, Dr Mosharraf acknowledged that the BNP, under the leadership of Begum Khaleda Zia, continued to thrive. He praised her relentless efforts in leading a movement to overthrow an autocratic regime, underscoring her unparalleled popularity in Bangladesh.
