Sylhet: Bangladesh’s senior assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin praised batter Saif Hasan’s strong mindset, highlighting his grit and determination in making a successful return to the national team. Saif, who rejoined the team after a four-year hiatus, made significant contributions with two wickets and an unbeaten 36 off 19 balls, leading Bangladesh to an eight-wicket victory over the Netherlands in their first match.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, despite the performance being against a relatively weaker opponent, Saif’s approach and body language have garnered widespread praise. Salahuddin remarked during Bangladesh’s optional practice session for the second T20 in Sylhet, “Not everyone can make a comeback so strongly after setbacks early in their career, especially with Saif having the tag of a Test cricketer. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, particularly the determination he showed on his return.”

Saif Hasan’s return to the national team was unexpected. Early in his career, he was deemed sui
table for Test cricket. However, his six-match Test stint ended without a half-century. His T20I performances were also underwhelming, with three ducks in five matches before the game against the Netherlands. Saif’s role transformation began domestically, where he started batting in the middle order and improved his bowling while honing his batting skills.

In a post-match interview, Saif credited his revival to extensive work with Salahuddin, which prepared him for his national team comeback. Although Saif was not a focal point for the Asia Cup discussions, unlike Nurul Hasan Sohan, his inclusion caught many by surprise. The selectors’ faith in his ability to adapt to multiple roles paid off against the Netherlands.

Since being dropped from the national team in 2021, Saif has only participated in the Asian Games. Salahuddin believes Saif possesses the potential for consistent performance, noting, “Many people try, but patience may last a month, two months, or a year. Saif demonstrated patience for four year
s. It’s significant. I think he will benefit from his stubbornness and determination.”

Salahuddin also cautioned against premature praise, stating, “I have requested before, don’t lift anyone up too quickly. Don’t bring anyone down too quickly. He needs to do it consistently.”

The second T20 match is scheduled for tomorrow at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. A victory would secure the series for Bangladesh with a game to spare.
