Rangpur Hosts Enthusiastic Celebration of May Day and Occupational Health and Safety Day

Rangpur: The historic May Day and National Occupational Health and Safety Day 2025 were celebrated in Rangpur metropolis today under the theme ‘Workers and employers united, let’s rebuild this country anew’.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the district administration, along with the Regional Office of the Department of Labour and the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE), organized a vibrant rally followed by a discussion to mark the occasion. The rally commenced from the premises of the District Commissioner’s office, attracting participation from government officials, employees, politicians, and labor leaders from various sectors.



The procession traversed the main roads of the city, culminating at the Public Library ground. The subsequent discussion was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal at the District Shilpokola Academy Auditorium located on the Public Library grounds.



Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md. Shahidul Islam graced the event as the chief guest. Other noteworthy speakers included Rangpur Metropolitan Additional Police Commissioner Md. Ruhul Amin, Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Joynal Abedin, Deputy Inspector General of the DIFE at its Rangpur regional office Md. Al Amin, and joint convener of the Rangpur Divisional and Metropolitan Sramik Dal labor leader Abdul Khaleque.



During his address, the chief guest emphasized the pivotal role of the working class as the backbone of society, underscoring their significant contribution to the national economy. He stressed the necessity of ensuring fair wages and safe workplaces for workers. Reflecting on the July-August mass uprising, he highlighted its focus on demanding fair rights and the eradication of discrimination. He urged for organized protests against any occurrence of injustice and discrimination.



Speaking directly to factory owners, he called for the protection and implementation of workers’ rights, advocating for a compassionate approach aligned with the spirit of the July-August 2024 uprising to prevent discontent among the workforce.



The day was also observed by various organizations, including the district and metropolitan units of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, BNP and Ganosamhati Andolon, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal, along with different workers’ organizations, laborers, professionals, human rights organizations, and NGOs.
