Dhaka: The National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) has extended legal assistance to 124,808 prisoners at government expense. This initiative highlights the organization’s extensive efforts to provide legal support to incarcerated individuals across the nation.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the information was disclosed in a report published on the NLASO website. The report details legal assistance provided by NLASO from 2009 to February 2025. The service initially launched at the district level, later expanding to include the Supreme Court, the Workers’ Legal Aid Cell in Dhaka and Chattogram, and prisons countrywide.
The report indicates that a total of 11,82,767 beneficiaries have received government-funded legal aid from 2009 to February 2025. Among these, 124,808 beneficiaries are prisoners. The Supreme Court Legal Aid Office assisted 28,761 individuals, while 9,39,831 people received services through district legal aid offices. Additionally, Dhaka and Chittagong Workers’ Legal Aid Cells aided 29,117 people, and the National Helpline Call Center supported 1,85,058 individuals.
The legal aid service operates under the ‘Legal Aid Act,’ aiming to assist financially indigent and incompetent individuals seeking justice. The activities of NLASO are managed under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
