Dhaka: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 has scheduled January 20 for the delivery of its judgment in a case concerning crimes against humanity related to the killing of six individuals in Chankharpul, Dhaka, on August 5, 2024. The announcement was made by the three-member tribunal, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, following the conclusion of the defense’s arguments.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, charges were framed against eight accused on July 14, 2025, in connection with the killings. The accused include former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) officials: Commissioner Habibur Rahman, Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, Additional Deputy Commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam, and Assistant Commissioner of DMP’s Ramna Zone Mohammad Imrul, along with former Inspector Md Arshad Hossain, constable Md Sujon, constable Imaj Hossain Emon, and constable Nasirul Islam. The first four accused are being tried in absentia as they have not been apprehended.

The prosecution initiated proceedings with its opening statement on August 11. Inspector Arshad was represented by Advocate Saddam Hossain Ovy, while Barrister Sifat Mahmud appeared for constable Md Sujon. Advocates Shibli Sadekin and Abul Hasan represented constables Imaj Hossain Emon and Nasirul Islam, respectively. State-appointed counsel Advocate Md Kutubuddin defended the four fugitive accused.

On June 3, the tribunal ordered the publication of notices in two national dailies, seeking the presence of the four fugitive accused. Despite the publication of these notices the following day, the accused did not appear, necessitating the appointment of state defense counsel. The prosecution had submitted formal charges against the eight accused on May 25, marking the first formal charge filed at the ICT related to cases arising from the July-August mass uprising.

The individuals who lost their lives in the Chankharpul area on August 5, 2024, were Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Zunayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Md Ismamul Haque, and Manik Miah. The tribunal’s investigation agency provided a comprehensive 90-page probe report on April 20, 2025.
