Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad emphasized today that a level playing field for free and fair elections has yet to be established in the country. He highlighted the necessity of ensuring equal opportunity for all political parties in the electoral process.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Azad made these remarks while speaking to journalists after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon. A five-member delegation from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, led by Azad, participated in the meeting with the CEC.
Azad stated that the party has no objection if the election is held in February. He proposed to the Commission to announce a timeline for holding elections either in February or April. He added that if the government believes preparations are completed and intends to hold the election in December this year, Jamaat-e-Islami has no objection to that either.
Discussing the demand for elections under the Proportional Representation (PR) system, Azad mentioned the party’s efforts to build public opinion in favor of this system. He noted that this issue has been presented not only to the government but also to the public through meetings and rallies across the country, and there is a growing support for the PR system.
Azad further observed that following the July Uprising, a new political expectation has emerged among the people. He believes that the people of Bangladesh are now expressing support for a refined and modern political framework, including the PR system.
