Dhaka: Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury inaugurated an emergency hotline service at Dhaka Central Jail, Keraniganj, today. The newly launched service, accessible via hotline number 09612021690, aims to provide round-the-clock assistance to the relatives of prisoners, offering crucial information about inmates.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser emphasized that the hotline will enable families to obtain details regarding a prisoner’s location, court appearance dates, meeting schedules, phone conversations, health status, and parole information. Additionally, the hotline will facilitate the submission of complaints and suggestions. Individuals injured in the July uprising will be employed within this emergency service.
In response to queries from journalists, Lt. Gen. Jahangir Alam noted that 700 fugitives remain at large following their escape during the July-August revolution, while the rest have been recaptured and detained. A thorough investigation is ongoing to locate those still evading capture.
The adviser clarified that no convicts have been released under general amnesty since August 5; those freed were granted bail. He warned that individuals on bail who engage in new criminal activities would face arrest and prosecution.
Addressing concerns about rising crimes, including robbery and extortion, the adviser acknowledged the increase but assured that stringent measures are being implemented to combat these issues. Despite no police shortages, he stressed the need for greater diligence in law enforcement duties.
During his visit to Keraniganj Central Jail, the adviser assessed prisoner conditions and acknowledged challenges stemming from overcrowding. Efforts are underway to address these issues, ensuring the provision of adequate food supplies for inmates.
