Govt. Vows to Strengthen Media Freedom: Zahed

Dhaka: Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman has announced that the government is committed to fostering a strong, independent, and vibrant media environment in the country. Speaking at a dialogue at MIDAS Center in the city, Zahed emphasized that the government seeks no conflict with the media but aims to enhance media freedom as a cornerstone of democracy.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was organized by UNESCO Bangladesh and Transparency International Bangladesh to commemorate World Press Freedom Day. Zahed highlighted the government’s openness to constructive criticism, asserting that media freedom is vital for a democratically elected government. He expressed optimism that Bangladesh will improve its standing in media and press freedom in the future.



Zahed also discussed potential reforms in the state-run broadcaster, Bangladesh Television (BTV), indicating that discussions with the Prime Minister have taken place and that they share a vision for a reformed BTV. He stressed the importance of integrating media literacy into the school curriculum and mentioned ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Education and NGOs to make media literacy accessible to schoolchildren, particularly in remote areas.



He noted the prevalence of disinformation in both social and mainstream media, sharing his personal experience with misinformation spread through photo cards. Zahed remarked on the government’s consideration of a policy regarding the minimum academic qualifications for journalists, emphasizing that any such policy would not be mandatory.



Finally, Zahed mentioned that the government plans to consult with the Media Reforms Commission to implement feasible recommendations swiftly.
