Dhaka: Classes for the first-year MBBS students of the 2025-26 academic session began simultaneously at government and private medical colleges across the country today. To mark their first class, Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain held a virtual programme, joined by freshers from 112 medical colleges.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the virtual programme was also attended by State Minister for Health Dr. Md. A. Muhit, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Kamruzzaman Chowdhury, and Director General of the Directorate General of Health Education Professor Dr. Nazmul Hossain. This year, a total of 11,833 students, both local and foreign, got admitted against 5,100 seats in 37 government medical colleges, 6,278 seats in 68 private medical colleges, and 455 seats in 7 Armed Forces medical colleges.
A total of 122,632 applicants participated in the combined admission test for MBBS and BDS courses for the 2025-26 academic session. Classes at dental colleges and dental units of medical colleges are scheduled to begin in the second half of this month.
Following the central programme, each medical college arranged its own inaugural event. At the end of the programme, each student planted a tree under the initiative titled “One Student, One Tree” taken by the Directorate General of Health Education (DGHS). In addition, special motivational lectures were arranged at each college to support the mental well-being and boost the morale of the new students.
