Four Sentenced to Death for 2016 Barishal Rape Case

Barishal: A court here today sentenced four people to death for raping a girl in the city area in 2016. Judge of Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal M Rakibul Islam delivered the verdict in presence of three convicts on Sunday afternoon, said public prosecutor of the court Abdul Mannan Mridha. The court also fined them Taka one lakh each.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the convicted individuals are Russell Gazi, Rajib Jamaddar, Md. Zahid, and Khokon Khan. Among them, Rokon Khan remains absconding. All four accused are residents of Dhan Gabesna Road area of Barishal city. The incident dates back to November 10, 2016, when the victim left her house with one lakh taka and was heading to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMC) Hospital.



As she boarded an auto rickshaw, the driver diverted her to a different location. When she called for help, the accused assaulted her. Subsequently, they took her into a forested area in the city’s Trish Godown area and raped her in turn. The following morning, her family rescued her and admitted her to the OCC of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMC) Hospital.



The victim filed a case with the Kotwali Model Police Station the next day, naming the four individuals as the accused. Police inspector Md. Ataur Rahman submitted a charge sheet to the court on November 23, 2017. The court reached its verdict today after considering the testimony of 11 witnesses.
