Dhaka: Jahangirnagar University (JU) has officially named the road stretching from the main gate to the Shaheed Minar as the “Afsana Karim Rachi Memorial Road” in honor of the late student Afsana Karim Rachi. Rachi was a student of the 53rd batch (2023-24) in the Marketing Department who tragically passed away last year following a rickshaw accident on campus.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the road nameplate was unveiled by JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan. The ceremony began with a special prayer for Rachi, followed by a brief discussion. During his speech, Professor Dr Ahsan highlighted the noble actions of Rachi’s family, who declined compensation offers from the university and instead requested measures to prevent future accidents. He praised this as an extraordinary example of humanity and acknowledged the courage and wisdom displayed by Rachi’s parents.

Dr Ahsan also expressed his gratitude to the family for their support of the university’s decision to permit autorickshaws on campus under strict regulations to enhance student safety. He emphasized the significance of their cooperation in making the campus environment safer for everyone.

The event was attended by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Sohel Ahmed, various faculty deans, the University Proctor, Rachi’s parents, JUCSU Vice-President Abdur Rashid Zitu, General Secretary Mazharul Islam, Transport and Communication Secretary Tanvir Rahman, along with other JUCSU leaders, faculty members, students, and members of Rachi’s family.
