Rajshahi: Livestock experts at a recent discussion have strongly advocated for increased milk production and consumption as a strategic approach to eradicating malnutrition and fostering a healthier society. “Milk consumption is very important for both physical and mental development of children. So, utmost emphasis should be given to ensuring fair prices and safe supply of milk,” they emphasized.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the District Administration and the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) in Rajshahi jointly organized the discussion at the Rajabari Hat Dairy and Livestock Development Farm in Godagari Upazila. This event was part of the activities marking World Milk Day, which annually promotes the significance of milk and dairy products in diets. The theme for this year is “Let’s Celebrate the Power of Dairy.”
Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Afia Akhter was the chief guest at the event, with Superintendent of Police Farjana Islam serving as the special guest. District Livestock Officer Dr Atwar Rahman presided over the occasion. Other notable speakers included Upazila Nirbahi Officer Faisal Ahmed, Livestock Officer Sharmin Shaila, Veterinary Officer Subrata Kumar Sarker, and Deputy Director of Dairy Development Farm Dr Ismail Haque.
Prof Khandaker Mozaffar Hossain from Rajshahi University’s Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences delivered a keynote presentation highlighting the crucial role of milk consumption in nurturing a healthy nation. He pointed out that protein is essential for brain development and other vital bodily functions.
Dr Atwar Rahman elaborated on the importance of expanding the livestock sector to tackle protein deficiency and ensure food security. He noted that many individuals suffer from malnutrition due to insufficient intake of animal-based proteins such as milk, meat, and eggs. Enhancing local cattle breeds could potentially boost meat production, reduce prices, and mitigate malnutrition.
To commemorate the occasion, officials from the administration, police, and DLS organized a colorful rally around the Rajabari Hat Dairy Farm.
