Chattogram: Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain announced that the government has initiated the country’s first monorail project in Chattogram to address the city’s escalating traffic congestion. The project is undertaken by the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) as a strategic move to alleviate traffic pressure in the metropolitan area.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, this initiative is a joint venture between Germany-based Orascom Construction and Egypt’s Arab Contractors Group, both of which are globally recognized engineering and construction firms. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was previously signed between the companies and CCC at the World Trade Center in Chattogram, marking the formal collaboration for this significant infrastructure endeavor.
Under the terms of the agreement, the companies will conduct a feasibility study to assess the project’s viability. The estimated total investment ranges from Tk 20,000 to 25,000 crore, with financing efforts coordinated among Bangladesh, Germany, and Egypt. Upon completion, the monorail network will span 54 kilometers, featuring 32 to 33 stations across three major routes, enabling city dwellers to traverse the entire city in approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
