Panchagarh: Former Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan has been placed on a three-day police remand in connection with the killing and concealment of the body of Al Amin, a rickshaw puller involved in the anti-discrimination student movement.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Sujan was presented before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate of Panchagarh, Nahid Akhter Juliet, with a request for a five-day police remand. Prior to the court proceeding, Sujan was brought from the local jail. Lawyers representing Sujan contested the remand petition and requested bail for him. However, the prosecution argued for the remand and opposed the bail application. After hearing both sides, the court granted a three-day police remand, denying the bail petition.

Nurul Islam Sujan, who hails from Mohajonpara village in Boda Upazila, is the President of the Bangladesh Awami League district unit. He served as a Member of Parliament from the Panchagar-2 constituency and held the position of Railway Minister from 2018 to 2023. Adv. Adam Sufi, the Public Prosecutor of the court, informed journalists that Monu Miah of North Dorjipara area under Sadar Upazila filed a case accusing 19 individuals, including Sujan, on November 10 of the previous year.

Monu Miah’s son, Al Amin, was a rickshaw puller and an active participant in the anti-discrimination student movement. He was critically injured in an attack by a group of miscreants in front of the house of Sadman Sakib Plabon, the General Secretary of the district Chhatra League, on August 5 while returning home by rickshaw. The attackers took Al Amin’s blood-stained body, and he has been missing ever since, the Public Prosecutor added.
