Dhaka: A court here today sentenced former Khulna-2 lawmaker Mizanur Rahman to eight years of imprisonment in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Judge Md Abu Taher of Dhaka Special Judge Court-3 pronounced the judgment in presence of the convict and sent him back to jail with a conviction warrant.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court imposed a three-year jail term and a fine of Taka 20,000 under section 26(2) of the Anti Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and an additional five-year jail term and a fine of Taka 30,000 under section 27(1) of the same act. The two sentences will run concurrently. Court clerk Mehedi Hasan confirmed that the court also ordered the confiscation of Taka 1,44,50,989, which Mizanur amassed illegally, in favor of the state.
The case was initiated by ACC director Md Manjur Morshed on August 6, 2019, accusing Mizanur of amassing illegal wealth amounting to Taka 1.58 crore and concealing information about wealth worth Taka 20 lakh. The ACC subsequently filed a charge sheet on August 23, 2021.
The court had previously set today as the date for delivering the verdict. Mizanur, who was on bail, appeared before the court on the designated day for the hearing. On that day, the court canceled his bail and sent him to jail pending the verdict.
