Dhaka: Ensuring inhalers for every asthma patient is essential. Although asthma is a lifelong disease, experts said it can be effectively controlled through proper and regular treatment, with inhaler therapy being the primary form of treatment.

According to United News of Bangladesh, speakers highlighted these issues at a scientific seminar organized by the Respiratory Medicine Department of Evercare Hospital Dhaka on Sunday, marking World Asthma Day 2026. This year’s theme for World Asthma Day 2026 (May 5) is ‘Access to anti-inflammatory inhalers for everyone with asthma – still an urgent need’.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that is becoming increasingly widespread worldwide. People of all ages, including children, can be affected by the condition.

The event, held at the hospital auditorium, was attended by Director of the Bangladesh Medical Research Council Dr. Kazi Saifuddin Bennoor as the guest of honor. Also speaking at the event were Dr. Arif Mahmud, Group Medical Director o
f Evercare Hospital.

Scientific papers were presented by Dr. S.M. Abdullah Al Mamun, Senior Consultant and Coordinator of the Respiratory Medicine Department, and Dr. Jafar Iqbal, Senior Consultant of the AICU and HDU Department. The session was chaired by Dr. Ziaul Haque, Senior Consultant of the Respiratory Medicine Department. The event received overall support from Aristopharma Ltd.

Earlier, a colorful rally, a workshop on oxygen therapy and inhalation techniques, and a certificate distribution ceremony were also held as part of the observance.

In his keynote presentation, Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun said that climate change and air pollution have become major contributors to the growing number and severity of asthma patients worldwide. He noted that increasing levels of harmful particles, dust, smoke, and chemical pollutants in the air are causing a rise in respiratory complications among both children and older adults.

He stressed that controlling air pollution, increasing public awareness, and ensuring a
ccess to effective and advanced treatment for all are crucial to addressing the situation.

Dr. Saifuddin Bennoor said that while most people breathe in and out effortlessly every three seconds, asthma patients often struggle to do so, making it an extremely painful condition for them.

Dr. Arif Mahmud said that although asthma is a controllable chronic disease, many patients remain at risk due to lack of proper treatment access. “Therefore, ensuring inhalers for all asthma patients is essential,” he added.
