Savar: National Citizens’ Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has stated that elections will not be recognized without implementing reforms and holding trials for those responsible for the mass killings during the 2024 uprising.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Nahid emphasized the NCP’s stance, which prioritizes conducting trials and reforms before the election of the Constituent Assembly. “We believe that if we follow this path, the nation will progress towards democracy,” he asserted. Nahid made these remarks while speaking to reporters after honoring the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War by laying a floral wreath at the National Memorial in Savar. He was accompanied by NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Senior Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adib, and Chief Coordinator Nasir Uddin Patwary.
Nahid reflected on the sacrifices made by the people for freedom, democracy, and justice, linking the 2024 mass uprising as a continuation of these efforts. He remarked on the recurring struggle for freedom, noting that the nation has achieved and lost it multiple times. He highlighted the anti-fascist movement carried out in 2024, expressing hope that the people would not need to shed blood again.
The NCP leader drew parallels between the events of 1971 and 2024, suggesting that the spirit of 1971 was revived through the recent mass uprising. Addressing questions about political rifts, Nahid maintained that unity persists among political parties despite differing agendas, as they remain aligned with the platform created through the uprising.
Nahid concluded by stressing the importance of maintaining a unified front, despite differences, to fulfill the aspirations of the 2024 uprising and safeguard the nation’s interests.
