Death toll from Chattogram trawler capsize rises to six

The death toll from the trawler capsize in the Karnaphuli river of Chattogram rose to six, with the recovery of another body from coastal area of Sitakunda upazila in the district on Friday.

 

The latest of the deceased identified is Md Monir Hossain, 19, a resident of Mohammadpur police station in Magura. He was a crew member of the trawler.

 

Chan Mia, sub-inspector of Kumira River Police Station under Sitakunda upazila, said on information they in cooperation with locals recovered the body floating in coastal area of the Bay of Bengal.

 

On Tuesday, seven people went missing as the trawler, ‘MV Magferat’, sank in the river around 1.30am while trying to dock for maintenance near Ichhanagar village of Karnaphuli upazila, officer-in-charge of Sadarghat River police station.

 

Nine people, including the chief engineer, managed to swim ashore, but seven crew members went missing.

 

“One person is still missing and a rescue operation is on,” he added.
