Another 310 patients were hospitalised with Dengue in 24 hours till Friday morning, as numbers revealed by the health authorities showed the case fatality rate so far this year far exceeding what it was during 2019 – the year of the deadliest dengue outbreak in Bangladesh.
Of the new patients, 197 were admitted to different hospitals in Dhaka and 113 outside it, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
This year’s death toll from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh rose to 83 on Thursday with eight more deaths reported from Dhaka and Chattogram divisions.
Of the total deaths, 46 were reported from Dhaka division, 32 from Chattogram and five from Barishal division.
A total of 2,715 dengue patients, including 1,916 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.
This year, the directorate has recorded 23,592 dengue cases till now, with the 83 deaths giving us a case fatality rate (number of deaths divided by total caseload) of 0.35%.
In 2019, when 179 people died and the caseload was 101, 354 confirmed cases, the case fatality rate was 0.17% – less than half the 2022 figure so far. The CFR can be indicative of the severity of disease.
Dengue has been endemic in Bangladesh since 2000.
