Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Ministry Adviser Md. Mahfuj Alam today emphasized the role of the current generation as guardians of the nation’s sovereignty and democracy. “This generation is the protector of this country’s sovereignty and democracy,” Mahfuj stated in a Facebook post titled “Koeyekti Kotha (a few words).”
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mahfuj addressed claims by activists of a party who allege that students did not agree with the legal process of banning the Awami League. Mahfuj refuted these claims, clarifying that during his initial cabinet meeting, questions were raised about specific sections of the law, with support from Nahid and Asif. An adviser had suggested considering examples like the Nuremberg Trials during discussions on the party’s trial.
Mahfuj noted that while certain activists mislead students by siding with the adviser who proposed the Nuremberg Trials argument, there was no intent to create disputes. He highlighted that two advisers with legal expertise, one of whom has passed away, and the cultural adviser supported their position. Mahfuj expressed gratitude for the assurance that the provision for a trial of the Awami League as a party would soon be included.
Mahfuj urged for an end to misinformation, pointing out delays in declarations and manifesto discussions. He acknowledged shared responsibility for trusting assurances from the party chief. On the topic of upcoming general elections, Mahfuj stated that they do not wish to postpone the elections, which are slated for December to June.
Addressing perceptions of student capabilities, Mahfuj argued against underestimating students’ ability to form their own ideals. He reiterated the importance of student involvement in national decisions since August and criticized the shifting of blame to the student adviser.
Mahfuj concluded by expressing a desire to trust the involved party and its leader to play a patriotic role in the League’s banning and declaration publication. He stressed the necessity of political consensus between the party and students, advocating for a united front to protect the nation’s sovereignty and democracy.
