Cumilla: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman, Dr. Mohammad Abdul Momen, highlighted the pervasive issue of corruption as the fundamental cause of societal injustices during a public hearing at the local Shilpakala Academy. He connected these injustices to widespread public demonstrations, including the student-led uprising in August of last year. Addressing the audience, Dr. Momen emphasized the critical need to eradicate corruption to establish a just society.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Momen stated that although there is a collective desire to build a justice-based society, corruption continues to hinder these efforts. He stressed the importance of reigning in corrupt practices, suggesting that if complete eradication is not possible, significant efforts must be made to limit its influence.
During his speech, Dr. Momen criticized bureaucratic tendencies to delay decision-making processes, describing it as a misuse of power. He argued that true power should be viewed as a responsibility rather than a privilege, and reducing the tendency to enforce power is essential for establishing a justice-oriented social system.
The public hearing, which aimed to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of corruption, was attended by ACC Commissioner (Investigation) Mia Mohammad Ali Akbar Azizi and Commissioner (Enquiry) Brig Gen (Retd) Hafiz Ahsan Farid, who were present as special guests. Deputy Commissioner Md Amirul Kyser moderated the event, marking the first of its kind in the district.
