Dhaka: Canada’s Indo-Pacific Trade Representative Paul Thoppil is set to arrive in Bangladesh this evening, leading a business delegation on a four-day visit starting Sunday.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Thoppil’s visit will involve meetings with key members of Bangladesh’s Interim Government, stakeholders, and private sector leaders, as detailed in a press release from the Canadian high commission.

During his visit, Thoppil will emphasize Canada’s support for Bangladesh at a crucial time as the nation moves towards democratic reforms and aims for free and fair elections. He will discuss Canada’s engagement in the region through its Indo-Pacific Strategy and explore avenues to enhance trade and investment between Canada and Bangladesh.

Thoppil’s itinerary includes field visits to significant private sector zones, reflecting the enduring trade relationship and people-to-people connections between the two countries. The Canadian high commission highlighted the growing trade and investment relationship between Canada and Bangladesh, noting Bangladesh as a key trading partner.

Canada exports wheat, pulses, cereals, and machinery to Bangladesh, while also being a substantial purchaser of Bangladeshi textiles and garments. The release further mentioned that both nations are looking for opportunities to deepen economic collaboration, particularly in sectors such as information technology, aerospace, agriculture, and clean energy.
