Dhaka: Religious Affairs Adviser Dr. AFM Khalid Hossain announced today that this year’s ‘Bishwa Ijtema’ organized by Tablighi Jamaat will take place after the national elections.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Khalid Hossain made the announcement following a comprehensive discussion with Tablighi Jamaat leaders. He noted that law enforcement agencies are currently preoccupied with election preparations and the evolving election atmosphere. The adviser emphasized that given the large number of devotees expected to attend the Ijtema and the involvement of law enforcement, it was decided that the event would be postponed until after the elections.

Dr. Khalid conveyed these details to reporters after a meeting with the two factions of Tablighi Jamaat. He mentioned that while the exact date of the Bishwa Ijtema will be determined post-elections, it is confirmed that the event will not occur before the elections. The timing will be settled at a convenient moment once the elections are concluded.

Addressing questions from reporters, Dr. Khalid indicated that there are no current indications of the elections being delayed. The government intends to conduct the elections by the first half of February, leaving any further speculation unwarranted at this point. He also highlighted concerns regarding potential disruptions in law and order that often accompany the election period, which contributed to the decision to defer the Ijtema to a later date. This decision is also aimed at ensuring the safety of foreign guests expected to attend the gathering.
