Ottawa: The Bangladesh High Commission in Ottawa observed Genocide Day with due solemnity. High Commissioner Nahida Sobhan presided over a discussion on the occasion at the High Commission auditorium, a press release of the high commission said.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the program commenced with a candle-lighting ceremony in honor of the martyrs who lost their lives on the night of March 25 and during the nine-month War of Independence in 1971, as well as during the 2024 July Uprising. A one-minute silence was observed in memory of the martyrs.
The event continued with the reading of a message from Chief Adviser Professor Mohammad Yunus. High Commissioner Nahida Sobhan emphasized the need for global recognition of the 1971 Bangladesh genocide in her speech. She also described the 2024 July Uprising as a continuation of the nation’s enduring struggle for dignity, emancipation, and the rights of the people.
The program concluded with a special prayer for the departed souls of all martyrs of Bangladesh’s War of Independence and the 2024 July Uprising, along with a prayer for the continued peace, progress, and prosperity of the country and its people.
