Dhaka: The interim government has announced a significant amendment to the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act-2000, aiming to establish special tribunals specifically for the trial of child rape cases. Law Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul revealed this decision during a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy following a special meeting of the council of advisers at the Chief Adviser’s Office.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Asif Nazrul stated that the amended act is expected to be finalized by Thursday, with its official gazette to be published promptly. The amendment distinguishes between rape incidents involving consent obtained through promises of marriage and those committed without consent, with a reduction in the trial and investigation duration for the latter cases.
Dr. Nazrul emphasized the government’s commitment to these cases, noting that the definition of rape has been expanded to include any object used in sexual abuse. He highlighted that all forms of rape are now encompassed by this broadened definition. The amendment also addresses delays in rape case trials due to pending DNA reports, allowing courts to proceed with medical reports and circumstantial evidence if necessary.
The revised law also includes provisions for the protection and compensation of victims. Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan and Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam were present at the press briefing, supporting the announcement of these pivotal legal changes.
