Dhaka: Agriculture Secretary Dr Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian today emphasized the importance of implementing Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in mango production across the nation. He highlighted the health benefits of GAP-produced mangoes during the inauguration of a marketing program at the ‘farmers’ market’ on Manik Miah Avenue.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Mian noted the global demand for Bangladesh’s high-quality mangoes. Despite their popularity, limitations in production and export processes hinder their reach. He mentioned that Bangladeshi mangoes are currently exported to 38 countries, with China recently added to the list. Last year, 1,300 metric tons of mangoes were exported, and there is potential to increase this to 50,000 tons by aligning production with the regulations of importing countries.
Dr Mian also emphasized the need to improve mango color and extend the mango season to meet food safety standards. He assured that scientists are actively working on these improvements. The Ministry of Agriculture has several ongoing projects to address export challenges, and inter-ministerial meetings have been conducted to overcome these obstacles.
The event was presided over by Department of Agricultural Extension Director General Md Saiful Alam and attended by notable figures including Bangladesh Jute Research Institute Director General Dr Nargis Akter and PARTNER Coordinator Abul Kalam Azad.
