Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan emphasized the critical need for journalists to maintain professionalism and avoid partisan allegiance during her address at the ‘Media Festival 2026’, organized by the July Revolutionary Journalists Alliance at the National Press Club.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Rizwana Hasan highlighted the importance of steering clear of threats and intimidation, urging journalists to uphold professional ethics to secure a dignified societal position. She stressed the necessity of adhering to constitutional guarantees of freedom of expression and the right to form organizations. While acknowledging differences of opinion among journalists, she underscored that objectivity must remain the core principle of journalism. Her primary message at the event was to prevent the return of authoritarianism and authoritarian systems.

Rizwana Hasan expressed disappointment over the absence of a media commission and broadcasting ordinance even after 54 years. She revealed ongoing efforts to introduce these ordinances, incorporating feedback from the government, journalists, and other stakeholders. If time constraints hinder immediate enactment, she assured that final drafts would be prepared. The draft ordinances have been made available on the ministry’s website for public opinion, based on the Media Reform Commission’s recommendations.

During the programme, Samsi Ara Zaman, mother of martyr journalist Tahir Zaman Priyo, called for ensuring dignified livelihoods and facilities for journalists to prevent exploitation by fascist forces. The event also featured addresses by several journalists and political leaders. Additionally, a hotline number, 09644111444, was launched to support journalists in performing their duties during the upcoming referendum and election.
