Bhola: Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain today emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections, highlighting the longstanding deprivation of citizens’ fundamental voting rights.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Touhid Hossain assured that the government would extend full cooperation to the Election Commission to foster a conducive voting environment. He urged political parties to encourage peaceful voter participation in the electoral process.

The adviser spoke at the inauguration of a voting vehicle program at Bhola Government School ground, where he served as the chief guest. He stated that the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election is set for February next year, and the interim government has made extensive preparations to facilitate fair polling.

Touhid Hossain stressed the significance of the upcoming election, pointing out that no credible election has been held since 2009. This has deprived citizens of the opportunity to elect representatives of their choice. He highlighted the plight of young voters, particularly those aged 30 or below, who have been unable to exercise their right to vote in recent years. “We want an election where people can cast their votes according to their will,” he asserted.

The adviser issued a stern warning against any disruptions during the polls, stating that any attempts to incite chaos would be met with swift legal action. He mentioned that the Election Commission has been directed to suspend voting at any center where irregularities are detected.

Touhid Hossain also called on political parties to communicate their platforms to voters peacefully, advocating for restraint to ensure a free and peaceful election. He referred to the political change in August 2024, acknowledging the sacrifices of young reformers and the government’s efforts to align with their aspirations through reform initiatives, despite some unmet goals.

He reiterated the government’s neutral stance and lack of support for any particular political party, urging voters to freely choose their preferred candidates.

The event was attended by Deputy Commissioner Dr. Shamim Rahman, Superintendent of Police Shahidullah Kawsar, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Bellal Hossain, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Arifuzzaman, senior officials, and leaders and activists of various political parties.
