Beirut: Iran strongly condemned on Friday what it called “savage” Israeli attacks on Lebanon, after its arch-foe hit targets belonging to the Tehran-backed Hezbollah movement. In a statement, the Iranian foreign ministry urged “the United Nations, the international community and regional countries to confront the warmongering” of Israel while offering “condolences on the martyrdom of Lebanese citizens during the savage attacks”.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Israel announced on Thursday that it had struck a series of targets belonging to Hezbollah in its stronghold in southern Lebanon. This action followed a ceasefire deal signed in November 2024, designed to end over a year of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon. Despite the agreement, Israel maintains that it reserves the right to target Hezbollah positions it perceives as threats.

Israel justifies the latest strikes as a measure to prevent Hezbollah from rearming after suffering significant losses in the past year, including the death of its leader Hassan Nasrallah. The Lebanese health ministry reported that one person was killed in Thursday’s bombardments.

Tehran, a key supporter of Hezbollah, has also been a focus of recent Israeli and US military actions, with strikes on its nuclear sites during a 12-day conflict in June.
