Dhaka: The government issued a statement today clarifying the cancellation of a proposal to appoint physical education and music teachers in government primary schools. This decision followed a review by the Secretaries’ Committee, which identified flaws in the planning and feasibility of the project.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing issued a statement in response to media reports regarding the cancellation. The statement highlighted that an initial decision had been made to appoint an equal number of physical education and music teachers across 2,500 clusters of primary schools nationwide. However, based on the Secretaries’ Committee’s recommendation, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education retracted this decision.
The statement elaborated that the Secretaries’ Committee found significant flaws in the project’s planning. It noted that appointing a small number of teachers would not effectively benefit the primary education level and could lead to inequality, given the presence of 65,569 primary schools across the country. Implementing the proposed appointments would be challenging, as a single teacher would need to serve over 20 schools simultaneously if done on a cluster basis, rendering the management of working hours unfeasible.
The committee also suggested that, subject to future availability of funds, the creation of teaching positions for new subjects in all schools and subsequent appointments to those posts could be considered.
