Khulna: Khulna University (KU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. Rezaul Karim emphasized the necessity for youth unity to rebuild a new nation. Speaking at a discussion held at KU’s Liakat Ali Auditorium, he highlighted the significance of the July Uprising in reclaiming freedom of speech.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was organized by the Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) and featured several dignitaries including Professor Dr. Md. Nazmus Sadat, Director of Student Affairs, Prof Punam Chakraborty, Head of the Law Discipline, Assistant Professor Abul Bashar of History and Civilization Discipline, and lecturer Irene Azhar Urmi from the Development Studies Discipline. The VC remarked on the young generation’s ability to resist oppression and injustice, asserting that the country’s current state must be rebuilt anew.
The VC announced initiatives to honor Khulna University student and July Uprising martyr, Mir Mughda, by renaming the university’s main gate after him. Plans are also underway to create a memorial monument for the martyrs of 1952, 1971, and 2024 near the main gate, which will include graffiti related to the July Uprising.
During the event, Mohammad Zahid Hossain from the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office presented findings from the UN Fact-Finding Mission. HRSS Executive Director Ijazul Islam opened the event with a welcome speech, followed by Mohammad Babu, brother of martyr Yaseen, who shared his thoughts.
Active participants of the July movement, including Al Shahriar from KU’s Law Discipline, Ayman Ahad from the English Discipline, Abdullah Al Shafil from Northern University of Business and Technology Department, and entrepreneur Snigdha Sultana Munni, shared their experiences. Student representatives Mosammat Jarin Tasnim Swarna from Agrotechnology Discipline and Arpita from Mass Communication and Journalism Discipline also spoke at the event, which was attended by faculty members, students, and guests from various university disciplines.
