Dhaka: A Dhaka court today scrapped the bail plea filed by former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda in a case lodged for manipulating the national election. The decision was made by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah after Huda’s counsel submitted the plea before the court.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, KM Nurul Huda had previously given a confessional statement in the case on July 1. This statement was recorded by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman under section 164 after police presented Huda in court following the conclusion of his four-day remand. This remand was initially granted by the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Mohammad Zunayed on June 27, marking Huda’s first four-day remand in the case on June 23.

The case was filed by BNP national executive committee member Md Salah Uddin Khan against 24 individuals on Sunday morning. Among the accused are ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, three former chief election commissioners, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, four former inspectors general of police, as well as several former election commissioners and former chiefs of SB, NSI, and DGFI. The charges relate to the alleged manipulation of national elections in 2014, 2018, and 2024.

On June 22, KM Nurul Huda was taken into custody by police from his residence in sector 5 of Uttara. This occurred after a mob apprehended the former CEC around 7 pm. Subsequently, he was officially shown as arrested in connection with the case.
