Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman left here for Sylhet by air this morning on his first official visit as the head of the government to attend different programmes, including the inauguration of a canal excavation and the Notun Kuri Sports. Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman said the Prime Minister reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 9:15 am from his Gulshan residence. “Honourable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is going to Sylhet by air . . . the Prime Minister is accompanied by his spouse Dr Zubaida Rahman,” he added.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, after completing various programmes in Sylhet, including the inauguration of a canal excavation programme and the Notun Kuri Sports programme, the Prime Minister will return to Dhaka at night. The schedule shared by the Prime Minister’s Press Wing indicated that Tarique Rahman was set to arrive at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet around 10:00 am. He will commence his activities in Sylhet by offering ziarats at the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) and Hazrat Shah Paran (R).
Later in the morning, the Prime Minister will attend a foundation laying ceremony of a project undertaken by Sylhet City Corporation to address waterlogging issues in the city. The event will be held at Chandni Ghat adjacent to Sylhet Circuit House at 11 am. He will also address a civic rally organized at the venue. Following this, he will inaugurate the re-excavation programme of the Baisha River located in Kashipur Union under Sylhet Sadar Upazila around 12 noon.
In the afternoon, the Prime Minister will inaugurate “Notun Kuri Sports 2026” at Sylhet Stadium at 3 pm. This programme aims to identify sports talent among children and teenagers at the district level, fulfilling a key component of BNP’s election pledges. Tarique Rahman is also scheduled to attend a party meeting at the Shilpakala Academy in Sylhet at 5 pm.
On January 21, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman formally launched his campaign for the 13th National Parliamentary Election from Sylhet, delivering a speech at the Government Alia Madrasa ground in Sylhet.
