Chattogram: Police have arrested six Awami League (AL) leaders, including two public representatives, in connection with the murder of four students during the July uprising. The arrestees were identified as Abu Naser Babu, a suspended councillor of Raipur Paurashava’s Ward No. 1 and vice-president of the Paurashava AL; Abdullah Al Mamun, a Union Parishad member from Sonapur Union’s Ward No. 9 within the same upazila and joint convener of the upazila Swechchhasebak League; Monirul Basar Milon, president of the Chhatra League’s Ichapur Union unit under Ramganj upazila; Kamal Hossain, a Swechchhasebak League leader from the same union; Nur Hossain, an AL leader from Chandipur Union; and Mishkat Hossain, another AL leader.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the arrests were made from different locations in Chattogram, Ramganj, and Raipur in the early hours of today. Subsequently, the arrestees were sent to jail following a court order this afternoon, as confirmed by Officers-in-Charge (OCs) Md Nizam Uddin Bhuiyan of Raipur Police Station and Abul Basar of Ramganj Police Station.
Police reported that leaders and activists from the Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League attacked and opened fire on protesting students during the July uprising in Lakshmipur, Raipur, and Ramganj on August 4, 2024. The incident resulted in the deaths of four students and injuries to hundreds more. Multiple cases have been filed in relation to these incidents, and a total of 230 people have been arrested so far.
